The Center of Music and Art is pleased to continue the Bob Ross Painting Workshop series. Certified Bob Ross instructor Larry E. King will guide students in the wet-on-wet painting technique made famous by “The Joy of Painting” artist.

Diana Holcombe, art instructor at the center, is excited to offer this workshop series to the community. “These workshops are an excellent opportunity for artists of any skill level,” says Holcombe. “Students who have never painted before can create masterpieces in one session, and experienced artists can learn new techniques to enhance their work.”

“Larry King will guide students through the entire process in each workshop,” says Holcombe, “and at the end of the day, students will have a completed painting to take home.”

Workshops will be held on alternating Saturdays from 9:30 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. The cost of each session is $40 plus materials. Supply lists are available at CMA. Class enrollment is limited to 6 students per session. “We’ve found that smaller class sizes provide more individual attention to each student,” says Holcombe.

Pre-registration is required at least two days prior to each session. These classes promise to be popular, so sign up early to reserve your spot.

"A Survey of World Percussion Instruments"

Saturday, December 3 · 12:00pm - 2:00pm

As our world becomes more global, so do the influences in our music. This clinic is designed to introduce drummers and percussionists to the basics of the exciting world of non-western percussion instruments. Percussion instruments from around the globe, such as bongos, congas, djembe, and cajon, are frequently being used in music of all styles and genres. History, beginning technique/pedagogy, and hands-on performance opportunities will all be present in abundance for this eclectic clinic!

Vince Wallace is an adjunct professor of music at the Community College of Allegheny County and a freelance percussionist, educator, and composer in the Greater Pittsburgh Area. He currently holds master's degrees in Percussion Performance and Music Composition from Truman State University, and a degree in Music Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Vince maintains an active private teaching studio in East Pittsburgh, and teaches many high school and college drumlines throughout Western PA.

Tickets are $10 per person, and are currently on sale at The Center of Music and Art. Space is limited, so please sign up today!

Our student recital series is an excellent opportunity for students to showcase what they've learned through their studies. Family and friends are welcome to attend these free recitals, which are scheduled throughout the year. Here is a listing of the current schedule of 2011-12 recitals:

  • December 10th, 2011 at 10:00am and 1:00pm
  • March 3, 2012 at 11:00am
  • June 2, 2012 at 11:00am
The annual Christmas recitals (December 10th) are a favorite tradition here at the Center. Students generally perform a mix of favorite holiday selections as well as a variety of classical and other genres.

If you would like to participate in any of these recitals, be sure to mention it to your teacher.
